Wilkinsons Point, located on the foreshore of the Derwent River, is home to the My State Bank Arena and the Glenorchy Art & Sculpture Park (GASP!). The Glenorchy City Council decided to sell the area, formerly the Derwent Entertainment Centre, and Wilkinsons Point land, leading to the development of a new masterplan to upgrade the site as a national sporting facility and introduce activation of the remaining land.
Ireneinc was appointed to undertake a planning scheme amendment to the Specific Area Plan (SAP) that will integrate the necessary development controls to facilitate the new Masterplan for the site and future stages of works. This involved a high degree of strategic analysis, including consideration of several key elements, such as economic impact, flooding, Aboriginal Heritage, traffic, urban design analysis, and landscape design. Ireneinc were able to deliver this approval in under 6 months.
The amendment was approved by the Tasmanian Planning Commission. Ireneinc’s success in drawing together such diverse areas into a well resolved masterplan has earned them recognition, including the 2020 Planning Institute of Australia (Tasmanian Division) Planning Award for Best Planning Ideas- Large Project and shortlisting in the Australian Urban Design Awards 2020. Today the site is home to national basketball team, the Tasmanian Jack Jumpers, with regular games attracting sell out shows of over 4000 people.
