Princes Wharf No.2, Hobart

This proposal was for the demolition of Princes Wharf #2 shed, and the construction of a significant new building to house the University of Tasmania’s Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies. The building, which is to be located where the existing Princes Wharf No. 2 shed, is placed in a prominent location on the waterfront within the cultural precinct of Salamanca Place and Sullivans Cove, in Hobart.

Our involvement in this project started from the early stages including initial site feasibility, liaison with Government Departments in securing land tenure, preparation and lodgement of development application, and expert evidence at appeal.

Significant challenges posed to the project included requirements of Tasports of continued port operation along the waterfront, and strict time management to obtain federal funding. These challenges and the sensitive nature of the site required an integrated design approach that included input from specialist consultants including, architects, heritage, traffic, infrastructure services, engineers, climate change, consultation, management and noise.
